Instrumentation & Fees
The CRL Flow Cytometry Facility operates in two locations: 491 Life Science Addition (LSA) and 461 Li Ka Shing (LKS) Building. There are 2 sorters and 4 analyzers in LSA; and there is 1 sorter and 1 analyzer in LKS.
Fees
Training fees for both Cell Analyzers and Cell Sorters:
- $150/session (UC Berkeley internal rate)
- $300/session (external rate)
User self-operated cell sorting (3 training sessions required; highly recommended for increased user scheduling flexibility and instrument availability) rates are as follows:
- $73/h (UC Berkeley internal rate)
- $146/h (external rate)
Analysis is performed by users (1 training session required). Rates for analyzer use are as follows:
- $45/h (UC Berkeley internal rate)
- $90/h (external rate)
Staff-assisted cell sorting (limited to staff availability; limited to 1-2 sorts per month) rates are as follows :
- $95/h (UC Berkeley internal rate)
- $190/h (external rate)
Signing up for sorting or analysis or training
Reservations are handled by an online system called iLab. Users must obtain an iLab account before signing up to use the sorters or analyzers.
Once you have an iLab account, you can log in to iLab in order to request time for sorting or training. Requests for sorting or training must be approved by staff.
Once you are trained you can use iLab to sign up to use the analyzers.
Instruments in 491 LSA
The flow core located in room 491 Life Sciences Addition building (LSA) is managed by Dr. Kartoosh Heydari. This core houses two cell sorters: 2 BD Aria Fusion. In addition, the LSA facility houses four analyzers: BD Symphony A3, BD LSR Fortessa, BD LSR Fortessa X20, and a Cytek Aurora.
Kartoosh, Melaine and Harman teaching and assisting the users on both analyzers and cell sorters.
Hours of operation are from 9AM -5PM, Monday to Fridays. These are the only hours during which sorting can be performed. Trained users can access the analyzers 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.

Instruments in 461 LKS
The Li Ka Shing (LKS) flow core is located in room 461. This core is managed by Dr. Kartoosh Heydari. It houses a BD Influx cell sorter and a BD LSR Fortessa analyzer.
Kartoosh, Melaine and Harman teaching and assisting the users on both analyzers and cell sorters. This core is part of the CIRM Institute at UC Berkeley.
Hours of operation are from 9AM -5:00PM, Monday to Fridays. These are the only hours during which sorting can be performed in this facility. The analyzers are available for use 24h a day, 7 days a week.
